Technical analysis and engineering reference.
In next-generation 6G ecosystems, network operators will manage hybrid topologies consisting of terrestrial fiber, high-altitude platform stations (HAPS), Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations, and Geostationary (GEO) satellites. Classical routing heuristics (such as OSPF weights or standard equal-cost multi-path) cannot cope with fluctuating atmospheric weather, dynamic orbital kinematics, and varying link latencies simultaneously.
AIXhaul formulates traffic routing as a continuous Markov Decision Process (MDP): - State vector includes link buffer queuing delays, signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), and historical packet loss across 1,000 distinct paths. - Action space outputs continuous split-ratios defining what percentage of traffic to route over terrestrial versus space channels. - Reward function maximizes overall throughput while penalizing packet jitter and SLA breaches.
Inference occurs within centralized controller nodes, which export optimal forwarding actions into P4-programmable FPGA switches at line rate, executing sub-microsecond packet classification without software CPU bottlenecks.
